Missouri Day provides a wonderful opportunity for our schools to pay tribute to our great state and celebrate the remarkable achievements of all Missourians. Our third-grade students have delved into the rich tapestry of Missouri's heritage, exploring subjects such as kettle corn, beekeeping, farming, Missouri games, the history of Lucy Wortham James, and the delicious art of making funnel cakes.

That's why, on this Unity Day, we are excited to announce our renewed commitment to anti-bullying efforts. We believe that everyone in our schools should feel safe, supported, and empowered. We will be revamping our strategies, programs, and initiatives to ensure that bullying has no place in our district.
We've been listening to your feedback and we're dedicated to making our schools even safer for all our students. Your voices matter, and we're taking your concerns to heart. This team put in hard work during the off-season and it paid off. Throughout this season, our student-athletes achieved first place in an impressive seven out of the eight meets in which they competed. Help us congratulate them!
Tiger Highlight: From Donors to Heroes - Fall 2023 Blood Drive Recap!
National Honor Society (NHS) members teamed up with the Community Blood Center of the Ozarks (CBCO) for their Fall blood drive, and the results were outstanding! This event was open to high school students and staff, providing students with their first opportunity to donate blood and make a difference in our community. Students aged 16 and above stepped up to the challenge throughout the day, generously giving their blood to those in need, while NHS members volunteered their time to support the CBCO.
NHS had an impressive total of 48 donations today! The Spring Blood Drive is scheduled for May 1st, 2024. Help us cheer on our #MissionMakers as their effort has made a direct impact on the well-being of our community! #NHS #CBCO #stjschools #tigerpride
Learning Highlight: Fire Safety at LWJE Library!
To promote fire safety last week, the amazing library staff developed different activities that left our students fired up and ready to learn. Tiger Cubs students had fun reading "The Gingerbread Man - Loose on the Firetruck!" Afterward, they constructed their very own fire trucks, exploring different shapes along the way. Learning Highlight: Spooky Decimal Fun!
Mrs. Lorraine's fifth-grade students have been learning about decimals and added a fun twist in time for Halloween. They practiced adding and subtracting decimals using a Halloween-themed game. Mission Monday: Guiding the Way - Tiger Training Mentorship!
High school volleyball players recently stepped up as mentors, assisting LWJE students with athletic fundamentals during our Tiger Training enrichment program. Learning Highlight: An Egg-citing Time in Mrs. Berkelman's FACS Class!
FACS students recently embarked on an Egg Parent Project. Each student had to create a secure carrying case for their delicate egg and assume the role of a devoted parent for a full 48 hours. The building was on high alert to make sure no egg baby was unintentionally left behind and they could report it to the authorities (Mrs. Berkelman). A "daycare" service was also arranged for students who attended a field trip during the project.

Middle school students recently rallied together to prepare the gym for a home basketball game for our middle school girls. They set up bleachers, arranged chairs, and stocked the concession stand, showcasing the power of teamwork.

Learning Highlight: Kindergarten STEM Adventures - The Wrecking Ball Challenge!
Mrs. Witt's kindergarten class recently completed a STEM activity - the Wrecking Ball Challenge. Their goal was to knock over miniature paper houses with precision, learning important concepts like force, motion, angle, and teamwork. This hands-on project promotes creativity and lays the foundation for future innovation.

Learning Highlight: Embark on an Ancient Egyptian Adventure with 3rd Grade EXCEL!
Our 3rd-grade EXCEL students are on a captivating voyage through the world of Ancient Egypt, a civilization steeped in incredible history and mystery.
Recently, student Lydia Moreland's grandparents brought in a sarcophagus and Pharaoh clothing, further sparking our students' curiosity for this ancient land. They were able to expand their knowledge of the mummification process through hands-on experience. The very sarcophagus that our students enjoyed seeing up close was made by Lydia's aunt during her middle school years. Topics such as Ancient Egypt show that the legacy of knowledge can inspire generations!

Learning Highlight: Exploring American Modernism - The Great Gatsby and Cubism!
High school English students teamed up with Mrs. Harlan in the library recently for a special project. In class, students have been reading "The Great Gatsby," a 1925 classic set in the Jazz Age—a significant part of American Modernism literature.
American Modernism, born after WWI, marked a cultural and artistic shift in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. One remarkable aspect was the rise of Cubism in art, where objects and figures are deconstructed and reassembled into abstract forms.

Tiger Highlight: Tigers Spotted at Missouri S&T!
FTA students from St. James R-1 School District, along with their peers from seven other schools, recently paid a visit to the Missouri University of Science and Technology (S&T) Education Department. These aspiring educators participated in a range of engaging activities from STEM challenges, service opportunities, campus tours, and a session about the education program at S&T. Fire Prevention Week: Igniting Knowledge Through Community Partnerships!
Our third-grade students had an informative session on fire safety followed by an eye-opening visit to the Fire House, where they experienced a simulation to understand the hazards within their homes and how to escape in emergencies. STATE BOUND: Girls Golf Trio Qualifies for State!
Congratulations to our Girls Golf team for their success at Districts today! Three athletes qualified for the state tournament in Joplin on October 16-17th: Cally Gibson, Ally Hartley, and Lydia Kemnitzer. Overall, the team placed 3rd in Districts.

To kick off Fire Prevention Week, our Kindergarten and Tiger Cubs students had an engaging learning experience with the support of our community partners, including the St. James Ambulance District, St. James Police Department, St. James Fire Protection District, and Copeland Bus Service. We also had guests from our city and state governments, City Administrator Dan Knoell, and our State Representative Tara J. Peters!
These real-world experiences enrich our students' education, contributing to their academic growth and understanding of the world around them. We're grateful for the support of our community in shaping the minds and hearts of our future leaders. Mission Monday Highlight: St. James FCA - Inspiring Youth, Strengthening Community!
So far this year, St. James High School’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) has brought students together to grow personally and to extend their hands in service to our community.
FCA isn't just for athletes; it's open to all high school students who want to explore their passions and use them to make a difference. While sponsors Bri Hodge and Luke Overton assist with logistics, our students lead the way, fostering a sense of community and purpose.
Every week, students gather to celebrate their shared values. On Tuesdays, they enjoy uplifting songs together, and on Thursdays, they're treated to inspiring messages their fellow students deliver. These gatherings help nurture a sense of togetherness and encouragement.
Beyond the school walls, FCA is actively involved in community outreach. Leadership students have spent time with Terry Geiler from the Cowboy Church, engaging in conversations and offering encouragement to those they meet. They have also helped with Commodity Distribution at St. James Caring Center, providing vital support to those in our community who need it most.
Looking ahead, FCA has more community outreach in the works. They are dedicated to making a positive impact in our community, striving to create a more connected and compassionate environment for our students and neighbors.
