Tiger Highlight! Recently, the second-grade classes had the opportunity to attend a field trip to Earth's Classroom in Rosebud, Missouri. This field trip provided students with a unique and engaging way to learn about Native American Indians of Missouri and their use of local natural resources. Students gained insight into the past by learning various skills, such as fire-building, home construction styles, and sign language. In addition to this, the students were able to hear fun stories about Missouri's wild mammals and examine both furs and skulls. Through hands-on instruction, the students were able to better understand and appreciate the natural world around them. The second graders were able to take home their very own track mold of a Missouri wild mammal! Thank you to Earth's Classroom in Rosebud, MO for providing this engaging experience about Missouri's history and natural resources. By empowering students through caring relationships, academic excellence, and community partnerships, the St. James R-1 School District is equipping its students with the knowledge and skills necessary to become lifelong learners and responsible citizens.

To celebrate our outstanding state APR scores, Mr. Webster and Dr. Williams took charge of the grill and cooked up a feast for all Middle School students and staff members. It was a fantastic opportunity for everyone to come together and enjoy some delicious food while celebrating our academic achievements. We couldn't be prouder of our students and staff. Mission Monday Highlight! At St. James R-1 School District, we aim to empower all students through caring relationships. Tomorrow, April 18th, our students and staff will show their support for their peers competing in the Special Olympics in Waynesville, Missouri. Over the last few weeks, the St. James Police Department has been collecting posters created by some of our students to help cheer on those competing tomorrow. We are thrilled to see our students coming together to support their classmates and demonstrate their commitment to building a community of kindness and inclusivity. Phelps County Riders and St. James Police Department hosted a UTV Fun Ride last summer to raise money for our Special Olympics athletes. The proceeds from the fundraiser helped purchase new reusable uniforms for our athletes and provide transportation to the events. This would not have been possible without the support from sponsors, riders, volunteers, and our community. Thank you! We wish all of our athletes the best of luck in the Special Olympics and thank you to the St. James Police Department for all your support!

Check out this update on the second-grade flower planting project from this past Fall! The bulbs that were carefully planted have bloomed into the most beautiful flowers, and the students couldn't be more delighted to see the end result. Learning Highlight! First-grade students at Lucy Wortham James Elementary have been learning all about animal habitats! They've been exploring different environments and unique animal features and adaptations. Earlier this week they participated in an interactive activity where students rotated through different stations, learning about animals. Then they headed outside on a field trip to Maramec Spring Park, where they were able to see animal habitats first-hand, tour the museum, observe animals in their natural environments, and learn even more about the amazing world we live in. We're so grateful for our partnership with Maramec Spring Park and its staff who continually support our students and their education!

Tiger Highlight! High school Spanish students have been busy creating beautiful "alfombras" (carpets) in class, and they recently took their creativity to the next level by visiting the Lucy Wortham James Elementary art classes to assist the students in creating their own! This experience was not only an opportunity for our high school students to practice their Spanish vocabulary and cultural traditions, but it also allowed them to form meaningful relationships with the younger students in our district. Building student relationships is crucial in our district, as it promotes a sense of community and belonging, and helps to create a positive school environment. Our high school students were fantastic mentors, patiently guiding and supporting the elementary students. We are proud to announce that American Legion Post 607 Commander Richard Doyle, along with members Douglas Lane and Bryan Adams, recently presented the St. James R-1 School District with Certificates of Appreciation for outstanding service and assistance toward the advancement of American Legion programs and activities. In addition to their kind gesture, they also purchased Girl Scout cookies from local troops to treat our staff district-wide. Learning Highlight! Students in Mrs. Hodge’s 3-D Art Class have just finished an imaginative collaborative art project. Introducing Terrance Florenzo III - a mischievous goblin that the class created together. Building Terrance together not only allowed the students to showcase their artistic skills, but also provided them with a valuable collaborative experience that promotes teamwork and problem-solving skills. Would you like to meet the dashing Terrance? You are invited to attend the High School Art Show this evening from 5-7 PM to meet Terrance Florenzo III and also view the incredible hard work that other art students have put in throughout the year. There will be live jazz music and vocals from our students. St. James FFA students have been working hard and it shows - they've qualified for the Missouri State FFA Convention next week in not just one, but ten competitions! FFA provides students with valuable hands-on experiences in agriculture, leadership, and personal growth. Let's show our support and congratulate them on this amazing achievement! The Missouri State FFA Convention will take place from April 19-21 in Columbia, so mark your calendars and cheer our students on as they represent St. James R-1 School District at the state level.

Mission Monday Highlight! Sixth-grade students at St. James Middle School have been learning about Argumentative Writing and recently had to debate the topic: Should People Own Exotic Pets? These students took the assignment to heart and used it as an opportunity to advocate for what they believe in by writing to Governor Parson. Addison Rodriguez, Landri Abel, Lilli Alexander, Jaelynn Jones, Brookelynn Tiner, and Chloe Collins (not pictured) wrote letters about the need for a law banning the private ownership of exotic pets. The students were honored to receive a personal response from Governor Parson and they are even more excited to continue their active role as citizens. The students' initiative is a direct example of our district mission: empowering students through caring relationships, academic excellence, and community partnerships. Learning Highlight! Middle school students in Mrs. Stack’s math class have been studying distributive property and factoring expressions, so they embarked on a unique adventure to apply what they have learned. They took advantage of the warm weather and went outside to climb "mountains." The students had to stop at eight stations on their way to Mt. Everest. At each station, they had to solve four problems before moving on to the next mountain. It wasn't easy, but they persevered, and the reward was worth it. They had the bragging rights of "climbing" Mt. Everest. This adventure not only helped students understand the concepts better, but also fostered teamwork, problem-solving skills, and critical thinking. Learning Highlight! Family and Consumer Science and Nutrition classes baked up a storm and created some delicious treats that are sure to brighten up your day! The high school students tried their hand at gluten-free, dairy-free chocolate cupcakes and frosting, overnight oats, frozen fruit cups, and s’mores waffles. Through this hands-on experience, students learn about measurement, timing, and following instructions. They’re not just learning how to bake, but also about the science behind the ingredients and how they interact with each other. Studies have shown that students who participate in hands-on learning activities have higher retention rates and are more likely to understand and apply the concepts being taught. #academicexcellence #stjschools #tigerpride

Mission Monday Highlight! Part of the St. James R-1 School District's mission is to foster positive, caring relationships with our community. Recently, the Middle School choir provided the St. James Police Department and the Phelps County Sheriff's Department with donuts. Pictured delivering the donuts is eighth grader Sofia Held. We love seeing our students showing appreciation toward the men and women who work tirelessly to keep our communities safe. Such acts of kindness go a long way in strengthening our relationships with local law enforcement and the communities they serve.
