Future Farmers of America (FFA) held their first event of the school year last week. Emily Douglas, a junior at John F. Hodge, was given the opportunity to provide media content to the District as part of her Supervised Agriculture Experience (SAE). She has been a member of FFA since her freshman year.
“The watermelon crawl is an event to help new members and their families learn more about FFA. We started off the crawl with a catered meal by Arnold‘s Grill and Smoke and then afterwards, members went outside for a series of games in their H.E.R.D.S. groups, which is a participation encouragement program that they started this year. It just gets the kids more involved. While all that was happening, the parents stayed in the shop and played a trivia game about FFA history. My first SAE is helping my parents work on our farm. We have a beef Angus cattle farm in which we have twenty-two cows. Four are mine and their names are Bella, Midnight, Maybelline, and Chocolate Ice. I feed the cows four buckets of feed every other night. My second SAE project is taking pictures and submitting them to photo contests and I also take photos everywhere I can to help out or purely for my enjoyment.”

The 2022-2023 school year has begun and fall sports are officially underway. Crowds can be large at many games, so we want to review expected student behavior during sporting events. The safety of our students and event patrons is important, so please read over the following expectations at school functions.
Elementary-aged children must sit with their parents or guardians during all games (football, volleyball, basketball, etc).
High school and middle school students must sit with a parent or guardian unless they are seated in areas designated for students in the bleachers.
All children are expected to sit and watch the game and should not be running around, playing behind the bleachers, under the bleachers, on the football practice field, on the track, rolling down hills, etc. The wooded areas and grass areas at the stadium are not to be used or played on during a school event.
In addition, kicking or throwing balls, bottles, seat cushions, etc., inside or around the stadium or gymnasium is prohibited.
No footballs, soccer balls, frisbees, or any other ball, large toy, or play item should be brought inside the stadium or gymnasium.
These expectations will apply at away competitions as well.
If we all work together, the games will be enjoyable, memorable, and safe events for everyone. We appreciate your support and hope to see you at the games cheering for the Tigers and Lady Tigers.
Our Community Tailgate Party is this Friday, August 26th!
Gates open at 5 PM and we will be recognizing our First Responders before the game. Come grab some food, check out the emergency vehicles, and visit with local organizations/businesses that will be set up for the evening. It's going to be a great night at the football field!
Come out and support our Tigers! #stjschools #tigerpride #community
Cheers to our Mission Monday Champions: Coach Guese and the Volleyball Team! By making a social contract, they build their own expectations of behavior, hold each other accountable, and develop trust within their group.

Retired and current educators in our area met today to discuss developing interest and opportunities for future teachers through the Grow Your Own program.
The Grow Your Own program was developed by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) to recruit more teachers and keep them in the profession. The temporary grant will help the District hold community events to bridge the gap between future teachers and regional education programs. Grow Your Own will also help provide scholarships for students pursuing a degree in education.
Today's group discussed the details of the Grown Your Own program and fundraising opportunities to provide future scholarships after the temporary funds expire.
For more information or if you would like to donate to the Grow Your Own program, please contact Katie Shultz at kshultz@stjschools.org.
