Part of our mission at St. James R-1 School District is empowering students through caring relationships. Today, high school students showed our littlest Tigers what that means.
St. James High School Senior Beta Club visited our Tiger Cubs classrooms to help each student write a letter to Santa and create a holiday craft. Student-to-student outreach is impactful to all involved and we're proud to see our students living the Tiger Way!

Our Tiger Trot student winners were treated to a pizza lunch with Mr. Webster and Dr. Williams yesterday!
Before the Tiger Trot this year, students learned they had the chance to win a lunch with Superintendent Webster if they had the fastest time in their building. In addition, the top-five winners in each building, as well as staff and community members, will have their name on our Tiger Trot Top-Five Board for the next year.
Congratulations and thank you for your participation! And thank you to Sonic Drive-In for providing swag bags to our student winners!

Mrs. Hodge’s digital art students have spent the last two months creating their own digital picture books!
Armed with an idea and an iPad, they got to work studying popular children’s picture books presented by Mrs. Harlan, the high school librarian. The books chosen were Caldecott Award winners which celebrate the artists of the most distinguished American picture books for children.
Mrs. Harlan read the students a picture book without showing them the pictures. They had to choose a scene from the book to illustrate based on how they interpreted the text. Later, Mrs. Harlan read the book again and shared the illustrations. It showed how our personal interpretation can be very different from an author/illustrator’s meaning. Students learned how pictures tell the story just as much, if not more, than the words.
After a crash course in picture book structure and industry standards, students began writing the text. Once their stories were finished, a guest speaker, Illustrator Katie Wools, shared industry tips and tricks as well as her own process for illustrating picture books.
The last couple of weeks, students have been creating the illustrations for their final project: a complete, digital picture book. Interested students will have the opportunity for potential electronic publication.

Lifelong Learning Highlight!
The St. James Ambulance District provided a professional development opportunity for a group of our staff last week. Working together, they completed CPR training for certification. Our staff learned the skills and knowledge needed to save lives in the event of an emergency. Thank you to the Ambulance District for your time and effort in giving our staff essential training to help keep our schools safe.

Congratulations to our November Leading the Tiger Way winners!
LWJE: Katie Moreland and Kayla Crites
Middle School: Brenda Stack and JC Shepherd
High School: Joe Campbell and Ronna Breeding
The "Leading the Tiger Way" teacher and staff of the month program is designed to spotlight one teacher and one classified staff from each building every month. We want to recognize our most dedicated and talented employees. Our entire District gets the opportunity to nominate a teacher and staff member who exemplifies the character and professional traits we strive for as a District.

Learning Highlight!
Students from John F. Hodge High School visited Lucy Wortham James Elementary this week. Señora Briggeman’s Spanish I classes have been learning about likes/dislikes and how to combine them with verbs to make sentences. They created a digital storybook detailing their preferences and presented them to multiple grades at the elementary. The younger students were able to practice their Spanish as they interacted with the high schoolers. Mr. Webster and Dr. Williams stopped by to listen to the Spanish Storybooks too!

Calling all St. James Alumni!
The St. James R-1 School District is in the beginning stages of creating an Alumni Association for all John F. Hodge High School graduates. Our goal is to create connections and increase communication with our Alumni Tiger Family.
We will be spending the remainder of the 2022-2023 school year collecting information from our current alumni. Starting in the 2023-2024 school year, we will use the contact information collected to begin sharing news, holding events, and providing a platform for communication between our alumni.
To share or update contact information: https://www.stjschools.org/page/alumni-relations
If you would like to be a member of the alumni association but do not have access to online information, forms can be filled out at the St. James Administration Building. Please send any further questions to: stjalumni@stjschools.org.

It’s Small Business Saturday!
We know the partnership between our District and the St. James community makes our town such a great place to live. Don’t forget to #shopsmall today and help us support all of our business partners in our hometown.

Learning Highlight!
Mrs. Evers and Mrs. Y’s Tiger Cubs held their own election and learned about what it means to vote. Ballots were also sent home to parents to fill out as a surprise to the students. Learning activities that align with current events encourage curiosity, strengthen critical thinking skills, and help our students, regardless of age, understand real world applications.

Today, we want to congratulate and celebrate two of our staff members on their recent achievements.
Linda Webster, our Nutrition Director, was sworn in as the President of the Missouri School Nutrition Association (MSNA). She will serve as MSNA President over the next year in her new role and will be "committed to advancing the quality of school meal programs through education and advocacy."
Stacy Blakley, a teacher at St. James Middle School, is now the President of Missouri State Teachers’ Association (MSTA). She was sworn in last Friday and will lead MSTA, which "serves more than 47,000 educators and is dedicated to educating the state’s children."
The St. James R-1 School District is proud of their accomplishments and we’re honored to have them both represent our school district at the state level.

Mission Monday Highlight!
Last week, the St. James R-1 School District received a generous donation from our neighbor Trinity Episcopal Church. Recently, they held a yard sale and graciously gifted the Nutrition Department all of the proceeds to be applied to overdue lunch charges. Mrs. Betty Cahill stopped by to deliver the donation to Mr. Webster.
Thank you for your continued support!
