Grant Dollars at Work!

Over the past year, the St. James R-1 School District has received multiple grants to enhance safety, resources, and student experiences, thanks to the leadership of Assistant Superintendent Dr. April Williams. Dr. Williams has worked to identify, apply for, and secure these grant opportunities, ensuring our schools continue to grow and improve. From new playground surfaces to district-wide safety upgrades, these grants represent a dedication to moving our district forward.

One recent highlight is the 2024 Playground Scrap Tire Grant, which awarded the district $39,288.00. This grant will fund the installation of poured-in recycled rubber covering approximately 3,200 square feet of the second and third-grade playground. The recycled rubber, made with Missouri products, is rated for a 2.5-inch thickness, the recommended amount to provide protection from falls at standing height. This upgrade will replace the existing pea gravel in the area moving toward the building and is expected to be completed by spring or early summer, based on the vendor's schedule.

This safety-focused project aims to reduce scrapes and bruises from falls on blacktop while providing a more durable and eco-friendly play surface. It’s another step forward in ensuring our students have safe, enjoyable spaces to learn and play.

Securing these grants is critical, as they allow us to fund projects beyond the standard budget. This essential support enables updates to facilities, technology, and safety measures that directly benefit our students and staff. The collaboration and expertise of our committed staff have made these opportunities a reality.

We’re grateful for Dr. Williams' vision and the team effort that has brought these grants to life. Take a look at the graphic below to see all the ways we’re investing in a stronger, safer district for our students through grants!
