The St. James R-1 School District will have an important measure called Proposition TIGERS on the April 4, 2023 ballot.

Let's review the difference between a levy and a bond. Levies fund ongoing expenses, such as salaries, maintenance, and safety while bonds finance larger, one-time expenses, such as building or renovating a school. Prop TIGERS is a levy increase, which means the funds will go toward maintaining and improving the day-to-day operations of the school district. The assessed value of a home is determined by local government assessors for property tax purposes. It is the value assigned to a property in order to calculate the taxes owed on it. Appraised value, on the other hand, is determined by a licensed appraiser and is an estimate of the property's fair market value based on factors such as location, size, condition, and recent sales of comparable properties in the area. While the assessed value is used to calculate property taxes, the appraised value is used by buyers, sellers, and lenders to determine a fair price for the property.

Proposition TIGERS is a $0.65 levy increase that will allow St. James R-1 School District to continue to provide a high-quality education to our community's children. These funds will be used to attract and retain qualified teachers and staff, maintain facilities, and increase safety.
